Field Book Android App

Field Book is a simple Android app for taking phenotypic notes. Collecting data in the field has traditionally been a laborious process requiring writing notes by hand followed by transcription. Field Book was created to replace paper field books and to enable increased collection speed with greater data integrity.

Using Field Book with T3:

In order to submit data to T3 via Field Book, your account will need to have submitter privileges on the T3 database. That means if you're planning on submitting data to the production T3 Wheat, Oat, and/or Barley databases (which generally have read-only access), you should connect the Field Book app to the sandbox version of the T3 database and then submit the trials to us for curation and addition to the production database.

In general, there are two ways to transfer data between T3 and the Field Book app:

  1. Using files - the trial layouts and trait definitions are generated on T3 and the files copied over to the Android device to be used in the Field Book app. Then, data is recorded in Field Book. When complete, a trait observations file is generated in Field Book and then copied over to a computer to be loaded into T3. For more information on this process, see the Using Field Book chapter of the breedbase manual.
  2. Using BrAPI - BrAPI forms a direct internet connection between the T3 database and the Field Book app. This can be used to directly transfer the trial layouts, traits definitions, and recorded observations between the database and the Field Book app. You will need to tell Field Book which database to connect to and login with your T3 username and password.

To connect Field Book to this database via BrAPI:

  1. Go to the Field Book Settings
  2. Open the BrAPI settings
  3. Make sure Enable BrAPI is checked
  4. Tap the scan barcode option in the toolbar
  5. Choose the Import new settings action
  6. Scan the above QR code
  7. This should then direct you to login to the database with your username and password
  8. Select Authorize Access to allow Field Book to use your account
  9. Check to use this database as the default Import Source and Export Source
